Earthquake Risk Scenario in Bangladesh: BNBC 2020 and Mitigation Measures
The Department of Civil Engineering at East West University (EWU) successfully organized a technical seminar titled "Earthquake Risk Scenario in Bangladesh: BNBC 2020 and Mitigation Measures" on 25 June 2026. The seminar featured Professor Dr. Tahmeed M. Al-Hussaini of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) as the keynote speaker. Professor Dr. Tahmeed discussed on seismic risk and earthquake safety in Bangladesh, covering the country's seismicity in light of tectonic fault lines and historical earthquake data, and lessons from structural failures—particularly non-ductile and unreinforced masonry buildings—in past earthquakes in Nepal, Japan, and elsewhere. A case study of the 21 November 2025 M 5.4 Narsingdi earthquake underscored urban infrastructure vulnerability. He further discussed seismic design provisions of BNBC 2020 for structures, foundations, and basement walls, and concluded with BUET's low-cost accelerometer (BLCA) and the associated seismic network (BLCSN) for ground-motion monitoring. His team also manufactured innovative seismic monitoring technologies developed at BUET. The seminar concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session, where students and faculty members exchanged ideas on practical approaches to improving earthquake resilience in Bangladesh. As a token of appreciation, the department presented the keynote speaker with a tree sapling.
