The Department of Civil Engineering Arranges a Seminar on Climate change and Civil Engineering

The Department of Civil Engineering organized a seminar titled “Climate Change Issues and Challenges in Bangladesh from Civil Engineering Perspective” on April 23, 2024, at the ‘S. M. Nousher Ali Lecture Gallery’ of East West University (EWU).

The keynote speaker for the event was Professor Dr. Ainun Nishat, Ex-Vice Chancellor and Professor Emeritus of BRAC University, the pioneering expert of water resources and climate change in Bangladesh. Professor Nishat explained the fundamentals of climate change and how it has become a global problem. With an interactive audience, he demonstrated how the climate change issues are going to affect the production of food in near future.  His presentation also explored that the current six seasons in Bangladesh are changing due to climate change and nature is responding to the change.  All these are creating new trends in research in different sectors focusing on the food production area, as per his statements. Professor Nishat then discussed how climate change issues have become an integrated part of every project in all disciplines to control Green-House Gas (GHG) emissions. According to his opinion, this has become a billion-dollar emerging industry with a focus on reducing the temperature rise in the world. Finally, he discussed the possible solutions and the track that Bangladesh along with the world may follow. The presentation ended with a lively Questioning & Answering session where attendees, especially the students, engaged with Professor Nishat on key aspects of climate change issues.

The chief guest of the seminar was the Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Shams Rahman, East West University. The chairperson of the Department of Civil Engineering, Dr. Naimul Haque gave the welcome speech on the occasion, while VC made the closing remarks with an excellent summary of the presentation. Dr. Sadik Rahman, a Faculty member of the Civil Engineering Department, was the anchor of the seminar.

Professor Dr. Mohammad Ashik Mosaddik, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Air Cdre (Retd) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Treasurer, Professor A.K. Enamul Haque, Dean of the faculty of Business and Economics, Faculty Members, Officials of EWU, and students mainly from the Civil Engineering Department attended the seminar. This seminar provided the concern of climate change issues that all researchers, educators, professionals, and academics must have.
