The Department of Pharmacy at East West University is delighted to welcome Professor Md. Anwar Hossain, Ph.D., who joined the department as a Professor in July 2026.

Professor Hossain is one of Bangladesh's most distinguished scientists in microbiology, molecular genetics, genomics, metagenomics, microbiome research, bioinformatics, and vaccine development. He previously served as the Vice Chancellor of Jessore University of Science and Technology (JUST) and was a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Microbiology at the University of Dhaka.

He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo, Japan, and completed postdoctoral research at Rutgers University/UMDNJ, USA, and the Suntory Institute for Bioorganic Research, Japan. Throughout his distinguished career, he has made pioneering contributions to infectious disease research, vaccine development, antimicrobial resistance, microbial genomics, and diagnostic technologies. His research team has established state of the art genomics and biosafety laboratories in the Department of Microbiology, University of Dhaka, developed innovative diagnostic tools, and led the development of Bangladesh's Foot and Mouth Disease vaccine program.

Professor Hossain has received numerous prestigious national and international honors, including the Ekushey Padak 2022 for his outstanding contributions to Science and Technology, the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences Gold Medal, and the UGC Best Researcher Award. He is a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences, reflecting his international recognition as a leading scientist.

His research portfolio includes more than 150 peer reviewed publications, over 100 GenBank genome submissions, and research grants exceeding US$1.5 million from organizations such as the World Bank, UGC, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and TWAS. He has established extensive collaborations with leading research institutions in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
