Dr. Md Tawfiq Sarwar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at East West University from May 2018. He received his PhD from University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, USA in 2016, MSc from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, USA in 2013 and BSc degree from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 2009, all three in Civil Engineering with a major in Transportation Engineering. At East West University, he is a member of the Program Self-Assessment Committee (PSAC), Department Development Committee (DDC), and the Curriculum Development and Technical Evaluation Committee.
Prior to joining East West University, Dr. Sarwar served as a Research Associate for National Research Council (NRC, a sister concern of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, NASEM) at Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), McLean, VA, USA. His research interests are econometric and statistical analysis, traffic safety, planning, operation, naturalistic driving study, vulnerable road user, infrastructure and disaster management, public transportation etc. He has worked on several projects funded by Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), National Science Foundation (NSF), Region II University Transportation Research Center (UTRC), New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) among other renowned institutes. Using the findings of these projects, Dr. Sarwar has published several journals and conference papers (published in top-tier Elsevier/Springer journals). Besides, he has served as a peer reviewer for several journals, such as, Accident Analysis & Prevention, Transportation Research Record, ASCE Journal of Transportation Engineering etc.

We are proud to announce that Mr. Sourav Shome, a recent undergraduate student from the Department of Civil Engineering, East West University (EWU), has been awarded full funding for his Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.) program in Civil Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, Canada starting from Fall 2025.
Mr. Shome completed his B.Sc. in Civil Engineering with a thesis under the supervision of Dr. Md Tawfiq Sarwar, Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, EWU. During his undergraduate studies, he actively participated in four research projects covering key areas of transportation engineering. The resulting papers from these projects are currently under peer review in reputed international journals, reflecting his dedication to research and innovation at an early stage of his academic career.
The University of British Columbia (UBC) is recognized globally for excellence in engineering education and research. According to the QS World University Rankings (2024), UBC ranks 30th worldwide and 2nd in Canada in Civil and Structural Engineering.
