A workshop on “Thalassemia Awareness among University Students in Bangladesh” was arranged by East West University Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Club (EWUGEBC) on 1 October 2018. The speaker, Dr. Muhammed Sougatul Islam, is the director of ProVax Pharmaceuticals Limited and also a senior research fellow of Biomedical Research Foundation Bangladesh (BRF). Including the club members, students from several departments of EWU attended this workshop. Thalassemia is a blood-related genetic disease which may occur if both the parents are the carriers of the gene associated with the disease. In the workshop, students could gain in-depth knowledge about the Thalassemia and the ways to prevent it. There is an inexpensive genetic test can be performed to know if anyone is a carrier. This information would help to reduce the onset of the disease. After the workshop, the prize-giving ceremony of the popular writing contest was held, and the winners were awarded crests and certificates.
