Dr. Roushney Fatima Mukti is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology at East West University (EWU), Dhaka, Bangladesh. She is a biomedical scientist and educator with expertise in cancer biology, molecular biology, microbiology, antimicrobial resistance, microbiome research, and translational medicine. Her research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of human diseases and developing innovative biomarker-based approaches for early diagnosis, disease prevention, and precision medicine.
Dr. Mukti earned her Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), USA, where she conducted research at the Hollings Cancer Center. She previously completed her M.S. and B.Sc. (Hons.) in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering from Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU), Bangladesh, graduating with distinction.
She joined East West University in 2015 as a Lecturer and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2019 and Assistant Professor in 2025. Since joining EWU, she has been actively engaged in teaching undergraduate courses in genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, and biotechnology. She is committed to fostering a research-oriented learning environment by mentoring undergraduate research projects, supervising thesis students, and promoting scientific inquiry and critical thinking among future biotechnologists.
Dr. Mukti's research interests encompass cancer biology, oral and gut microbiome research, antimicrobial resistance, molecular epidemiology, biomarker discovery, bioinformatics, and precision medicine. Her recent work focuses on identifying microbial and molecular biomarkers for cancer risk assessment, investigating antimicrobial resistance among clinically relevant microorganisms, and exploring host–microbiome interactions in human health and disease. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals and has presented her research at scientific conferences in Bangladesh, the United States, and other countries.
Her research excellence has been recognized through several prestigious national and international awards and fellowships, including the Prime Minister's Gold Medal for academic excellence, the National Science and Technology (NST) Fellowship from the Ministry of Science and Technology of Bangladesh, the Dean's Scholarship, College of Graduate Studies Fellowship, and Hollings Cancer Center Fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina. She has also received competitive travel awards supporting the presentation of her research at international scientific meetings.
Dr. Mukti actively contributes to the scientific community through her involvement in national and international professional organizations. She is a member of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), and the Global Network of Bangladeshi Biotechnologists (GNOBB). She has also served in leadership roles within professional organizations, including the Bangladesh Association of Biotechnology Graduates (BABG) and the Young Biotechnologists of Bangladesh (YoungBB), promoting scientific communication, collaboration, and professional development among young researchers.
Beyond research and teaching, Dr. Mukti is dedicated to strengthening biotechnology education and interdisciplinary research in Bangladesh through national and international collaborations. Her long-term research vision is to integrate molecular biology, microbiome science, and translational medicine to develop affordable, non-invasive diagnostic tools and innovative therapeutic strategies for cancer and other complex diseases, thereby contributing to improved healthcare outcomes in Bangladesh and beyond.
