Welcome to the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (GEB) at the East West University (EWU).
The field of genetic engineering and biotechnology is rapidly growing with widespread applications in many areas of biological and medical sciences. The demand for the graduates with the expertise in the fields of biotechnology and molecular biology is increasing day by day both in home and abroad. GEB Department of East West University intends to educate students with the necessary theoretical knowledge of biological sciences and also help to prepare them to be skilled to enter any research or industrial institutions of the related fields.
Admission Requirements
In addition to the minimum general admission criteria for EWU, students should have Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at HSC or equivalent level and Biology at SSC and HSC level to be admitted to Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology Program.
East West University is in the wonderful position of being able to attract extraordinarily well qualified applicants for its Professor and Lecturer positions. We are rapidly building a department that is staffed with experienced scientists with an up-to-date knowledge of technology and the insights necessary to guide students to the areas of their greatest potential. Currently, the department has one well-structured lab and also the immediate access of the existing lab facilities of the other departments of the East West University. Currently, the department is expanding on those facilities as faculties join the department and make their individual research needs known.
At present there are 267 students in the department as the department reaches the tenth semesters in a syllabus of a twelve semester degree program. The number of the students is increasing in every semester, and getting admitted into this department is becoming more competitive in recent times.
Currently, the Chairperson of the GEB Department is Dr. Suraia Nusrin. She completed her B.Sc. (Hons) and M.Sc. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Dhaka. Dr. Suraia achieved her PhD in Molecular Biology from City University of Hong Kong. She worked in Enteric Microbiology Laboratory of ICDDR,B as a research officer. She contributed as a first-author and a co-author of several manuscripts published in international peer-reviewed journals during her involvement with ICDDR,B and also during her PhD study.
The previous Chairperson of the GEB Department was Dr. Md. Mohiuddin Kabir. He completed his BS and MS degrees in Microbiology from the Universitly of Dhaka. Later, he did his PhD in Genetic Engineering from the Kyushu Institute of Technology of Japan. He did research works in Japan, in Russia, and in USA (as a NASA scientist) and published many important scientific papers in some renowned Publications.
Founding Chairperson of the GEB Department was Dr. Edward Lee Organ, who earned his postgraduate degrees in Molecular Biology from Vanderbilt University, in the United States. He was instrumental in the establishment of the department and had a lot of contribution to make the department stand on its own feet.
There are currently four full-time faculty members along with two adjunct faculty members. One of the lecturers of the Department, Roushney Fatima Mukti has achieved Prime Minister Gold Medal for obtaining the highest result in her respective institution. Lecturer Sheikh Ahmad Shah completed his BS and MS degrees in GEB at DU. Newly appointed lab officer Syed Raju Ali completed his B.Sc in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering from Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University and MS in Biotechnology degree from Bangladesh Agricultural University
The department is also pleased to have Dr. Md. Tofazzal as an Adjunct Professor. Dr. Islam is a winner of Bangladesh Academy of Science Gold Medal Award in the Senior Biological Sciences group. His addition to the Department will strengthen the GEB Department significantly and greatly expand the expertise available to the students. Dr. Marzia Zaman Sultana, an MBBS doctor, is another great inclusion to the GEB Family. Her expertise in human health issues, especially as they relate to social issues, contributes to making the overall range of faculty knowledge in our department larger that available within any other GEB department in the country.
