Welcome to the Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS) at East West University. Since its establishment on 14 May 2017, the department has grown into a vibrant academic community, uniting faculty members from Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Statistics, and Data Science. This unique blend of disciplines and expertise provides our students with a rich and well-rounded educational experience.
Our department offers two undergraduate programs — B.Sc. in Mathematics and B.Sc. in Data Science and Analytics — along with a Master of Science in Data Science program. These programs are designed to equip students with rigorous theoretical knowledge, analytical abilities, and computational expertise, enabling them to excel in academia, research, and industry. In addition, the department offers courses in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Statistics for students of Engineering and Pharmacy. We also plan to introduce a Master of Science in Mathematics, which will provide our undergraduate Mathematics graduates the opportunity to continue their higher studies within the same university.
The department maintains a very good teacher-student ratio, ensuring that students receive proper guidance in classrooms, laboratories, and research activities. At present, around thirty-five faculty members are serving in the department. Many have already completed their PhD, several are on study leave to pursue doctoral studies, and others are preparing to begin their PhD journeys soon. This strong academic foundation ensures that students benefit from both experienced scholars and young faculty members actively advancing their expertise. Students with high CGPA after completing a certain number of credits may also work as teaching assistants. This not only helps them support their peers but also provides valuable on-campus job opportunities. Serving as a teaching assistant allows students to prepare themselves for future careers as teachers and researchers.
Alongside their academic journey, our students are actively engaged in extracurricular activities such as seminars, workshops, clubs, competitions, and cultural events. These opportunities help them develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills, ensuring they grow not only as scholars but also as well-rounded individuals of society.
The department remains committed to excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement. Notably, two of our faculty members are recognized among the world’s top 2% scientists. Others are also actively involved in world-class research — independently or in collaboration with scholars from universities both within Bangladesh and abroad. Our students, particularly those in the master’s program, are engaged in research activities, while undergraduate students are encouraged to develop innovative solutions to global challenges through projects and guided research initiatives. Our faculty members are dedicated to advancing knowledge in their respective fields while inspiring students to think critically, work collaboratively, and contribute meaningfully to science and society.
Looking ahead, the Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences aspires to become a leading center of excellence in mathematics and data science education and research. We aim to nurture graduates who will make significant contributions to society and drive progress in science, technology, and innovation.
